About the Natural History Museum Image Library
Welcome to the Natural History Museum's online Picture Library. We
offer a comprehensive range of natural history images from the Museum's
work and vast collections, which includes an incredible assortment of
gems, minerals, mammal, reptile, fish, bird, plant and insect specimens
gathered from around the world.
Our diverse library features unrivalled dinosaur pictures, images of
human evolution, pictures of extinct species and remarkable fossil
remains. We have extraordinary magnified views of life as seen through
a microscope plus a collection of travel pictures taken as part of our
scientists' fieldwork across the globe. We also hold one of the world's
largest collections of natural history artworks, including original
watercolour sketches from the Cook voyages, Waterhouse's designs for
the main Museum building, and notebooks of key scientific discoveries.
The Natural History Museum picture library is a member of the British Association of Picture Libraries and Agencies. If you can't find exactly what you're looking for, why not try our
bespoke service? Choose precisely what you want from the Museum's vast
collections, and our photographers will photograph them to your
specifications.
The Museum houses a collection of over 70 million natural history
specimens, gathered over hundreds of years from around the world. The
collections cover virtually all groups of animals, plants, minerals and
fossils and form a resource of immense importance to scientists and
researchers. Because the collection is so large not everything has been
photographed but if you can't find what you need from our stock library
we are happy to draw on this huge resource, and arrange for our
in-house photographers to create new imagery in order to fulfil your
requirements.
Our curatorial staff will research and locate specimens that are
right for your specific purpose, you can even accompany them in order
to select precisely what you want. Our specialist photographers know
our collections well and will photograph the specimens you've chosen to
your exact specifications, giving you a unique image in the style of
your choice. Our charges for this photography service start at £55
for a flat copy, for example an 18th century illustration and £100 for
photographs of a three dimensional object, such as a mineral specimen. |
