About British Library Images Online
British Library Images Online gives you access to a wealth of photographs in a wide range of resolutions and formats from the British Library's extensive collection. Manuscripts, rare books and maps from 3000 years of history across every continent are all available. Customers are able to search, order, purchase and download images, and the library is being constantly updated as new material is made available. All images are branded and copyrighted to the British Library. Regular British Library Images Online customers include book publishers, TV production companies, broadcasters, advertising and design agencies, greetings cards companies and museums and heritage organisations. British Library Images Online offers concise and accurate search
facilities and a CD-ROM service for lower and higher resolution images.
For customers who know the exact details of the British Library image
they require (including the British Library shelf mark or manuscript
number) but it isn't available in the British Library Images Online
catalogue you can request a digital or photographics images from the Imaging Service. There are various options available to choose from when ordering your
photographs or digital images. High resolution TIFF files can be sent
to you on CD-ROM (subject to terms and conditions),
and can be ordered by e-mail. Images are sent to you via standard mail
unless otherwise specified. Please feel free to contact the British
Library Images Online team via e-mail with any questions you may have.
A large selection of images are also available as transparencies if you
so require, and low resolution images (72dpi) for personal or school
use are free.
Prices
Small JPEG files are 300dpi and will reproduce well up to 15 x10cm or ¼ page A4. The images can be paid for online and downloaded directly. Prices depend on usage, audience and number of reproductions. You will see the price calculation as you go through the online ordering process. If your required usage is not listed then please do not hesitate to contact the British Library Images Online team.
Large TIFF files are 300dpi and will reproduce to a high quality for sizes 30 x 21cm or A4. These images are supplied on CD-ROM and can be paid for offline only. There
is a charge of £20.00 (+ VAT) for the first image purchased. Subsequent
images are £10.00 (+VAT) each up to a total of 15 images on the CD.
If more than 15 images are purchased the price will be an additional £20.00 (+ VAT) plus £7.50 (+ VAT) per image for up to 30 images. For example, the price for 30 images is therefore £20.00 + £140 + £20.00 + £105.00 = £285.00 (+VAT). If more than 30 images are purchased the price will be an additional £20.00 (+VAT) plus £5.00 (+ VAT) per image for up to 45 image. For example, the price for 45 images is therefore £285.00 + £20.00 + £70 = £375.00 (+ VAT).
Postage and packaging will be added to the cost of your order and payment is required in advance. Payment can be made by cheque, credit or debit card, bank transfer or by opening an account. Permissions fees are charged in addition to this depending on usage, audience and number of reproductions. Please contact the permissions team for assistance.
