P1: The Art of Photography A refreshing alternative to technically biased photography courses, The Art of Photography is designed to give you an introduction to the application of the principles of art and design to photography. It has been designed to help you to use your imagination and to compose well-structured and satisfying images. This course is also suitable for those with digital cameras. P1: Introduction to Digital Photography This course helps you become proficient in using a digital camera and the computer software techniques needed to handle and process the images. Digital photography has made enormous technical strides in the last few years and is an established alternative to film-based photography. Avoiding unnecessary jargon and assuming no prior experience of digital imaging, the course guides students by practical experiment. Digital images are provided on a CD-ROM so students can work through procedures step-by-step, before applying the same techniques to their own photographs. P2: Social Documentary If you have admired the work of photo-journalists and documentary photographers but have steered clear of this aspect of photography this course will provide a structure through which you can explore the subject in a positive and exciting way. Building on the skills and knowledge gained in Photography 1: The Art of Photography, the course looks in depth at photography that seeks to document, investigate or comment on people and situations. Through the course you will develop an understanding of the meaning and purpose of social documentary photography and an awareness of documentary styles. By gaining further experience in the use of composition and lighting and skills in selecting, editing and juxtaposing images within a photo essay, you are encouraged to work towards a personal style.
P2: Landscape This course looks at the specialised area of photographing landscapes, a subject popular with many photographers. It deals with the technical control of large subjects and with working in variable natural lighting. Perhaps most important of all, it shows you how to look at landscape subjects and pre-visualise your photographs, an essential step in the process of developing a personal style through which you can record and interpret landscape.
P2: Progressing with Digital Photography Following on from Photography 1: Introduction to Digital Photography, this course examines in greater depth the special shooting and software techniques and procedures that will enable you to realise the full potential of this exciting new medium. Basic expertise in managing digital images is extended to include full control of colour qualities, methods of selecting parts of images, combining and manipulating these selections, the use of digital repair and adjustment tools and the application of digital filters. The course also considers the implication of realistic alteration to photographic images, its purposes and intentions, and how this can best be used to enhance creative expression.
P3: Advanced In this personalised learning programme you will work with a tutor chosen from the Photography: Advanced portfolio and together you will devise a course of study in your chosen genre.
