Seeking Cover

One of the most important things to do when you're out and about seeking that perfect shot is to seek cover, especially if the shot is one that you are going to have to wait for a long period of time to snap. One of the best ways to ensure that you are warm and comfortable is to consider commissioning a custom made cover that will allow you to sit safe and sound protected from the elements. This is important because your comfort and safety are clearly the most important thing to consider. After having carried your photography equipment a lengthy distance the last thing you want to do is arrive at the location where you want to shoot only to find that the location is so cold, damp and uncomfortable that you are forced to abandon the days photography and head for home.

This is one of the reasons why we recommend you commission a truly bespoke shelter or cover rather than purchasing one off the shelf. Models that are picked up from shops often represent some form of compromise, they will meet some of your needs but not all, and the last thing you want to compromise on is your safety and comfort. There are many companies who design and make shelters for photographers, anglers and other people who may spend a great deal of time outdoors, and there are a number of smaller companies who produce covers that can modify their existing stock or produce a bespoke design to your specifications.

There are many times that a full shelter or tent can be overkill, this is why we always recommend the personal cover approach. Something lightweight, breathable and shower-proof that you can throw over yourself or settle into on a cold and wet day to give you a measure of protection. We have found that Just Car Covers are very approachable and although (as their name suggest) their primary trade is in motor vehicle covers they are very amenable to modifying their designs or producing completely custom covers for keen photographers and other outdoors types. They often boast that they can provide a cover for anything and everything and many of us have put that to the test in recent years!

A well made protective cover of some description can make all of the difference between a pleasant day spent out in the wilds waiting for your prey to arrive to be shot, or just generally hiding away and enjoying the wildlife (one of the main applications of a photographic shelter). Be honest and forthcoming with what you desire from a cover no matter what company you chose to approach, you aren't being troublesome but are merely ensuring that your purchase is fit for purpose. Being overly polite in order to not hurt anyone's feelings can only result in you ending up out of pocket. Hopefully if you follow our advice here though this will not be an issue and you will soon have a wonderfully protective and cosy cover in which to shelter when the weather takes a turn for the worst.
